Description
The Hodgson tomb, located approximately 4 metres south of the tower of Christ Church, is a Grade II listed chest tomb. It commemorates Edward Hodgson, a cordwainer from North Shields and one of the founders of the Church, who was buried on 3rd November 1690. His wife passed away in 1689, and William Richardson, who died in 1710 at the age of about 59, is also remembered here. The tomb is made of sandstone and features rusticated corner piers and central side pilasters adorned with symbols of death, as well as a pick and shovel depicted in low relief panels. The rounded-edged slab is decorated with a deeply cut helmet, crest, and mantling above a blank shield.
