Description

Shipley Place comprises two terraces of houses built between 1972 and 1975 by Ralph Erskine's architectural practice, Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect, White, Young and Partners as structural engineers, and Stanley Miller Ltd. as the main contractor. The construction uses pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, featuring sloping metal roofs with vary-pitch design, supported by plywood box beam purlins. The windows are timber, with aluminium sliding opening lights, and some have been replaced in timber. The buildings have projecting porches with brown-stained timber cladding beneath metal roofs. Garages are located to the rear of Nos. 1-5. Shipley Place marks the main entrance through the Byker wall, connecting the metro station with Raby Street, and is a visually significant element of the overall composition. Historical and source information is available under the entries for Nos. 1-75 Dunn Terrace.
