Description

Nos. 1-5 Ellison Place is a terrace of houses built around 1810, currently used as Polytechnic buildings, offices, and a surgery. The houses are constructed of English bond brick with a painted ashlar plinth and dressings, topped with Welsh slate roofs. The terrace consists of five houses, each three storeys high with attics, ranging from five to three bays in width.

Nos. 1 and 2 feature central ashlar porches in a classical style. The porch of No. 1 includes an arch, pilasters, a cornice, and a blocking course, while No. 2 has pilasters and an open segmental pediment with a cornice and blocking course. Both porches have six-panelled doors, which are double under fanlights. The doorcases for Nos. 3 and 4 have fluted necking and dentilled pediments, while the doorcase for No. 5 has been removed. The windows have renewed sashes with wedge stone lintels, projecting stone sills on the second floor, and sill bands on the ground and first floors.

The porch of No. 1 has a plaque inscribed with 'Matthew White Esq., Mayor/Joseph Atkinson Esq., Sheriffe/1692'. The interior of No. 1 features a Venetian stair landing window in an Ionic case, displaying the arms of Newcastle in glass. Historically, No. 1 served as the Mansion House of Newcastle in the 19th century, and No. 5 was the residence of William Boutland Wilkinson, an early patentee of reinforced concrete in the modern sense.
