Description

Nos. 1-27, with attached garden fences and retaining brick walls and pergola, are part of an 'L'-shaped terrace of houses, flats, and pensioners' bungalows built between 1974 and 1976 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with site architect Vernon Gracie and structural engineer White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Shepherd Construction. The buildings are made of pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, featuring turquoise blue metal roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins. Most of the structures are two storeys high, except for Nos. 15 and 17, which are bungalows. The timber windows have aluminium opening lights. No. 5 is set back down an entry and has high brown weatherboarding, a feature also seen at No. 1. The first-floor windows of Nos. 5-13 and 19-27 are arranged in long strips with bright green timber surrounds beneath deep eaves. The timber doors, some renewed in hardwood, have glazed panels and are set in projecting porches with vertical green timber cladding. Gardens are accessed by steps between the retaining brick walls, leading to a decorative curved planter in front of No. 5. The central pergola at the corner of Dibley Street and Brock Street is an integral part of the design. This group of buildings creates a square and reflects the distinctive style of the Gordon Road neighbourhood.
