Description
The Hawthorn tomb, located about 25 metres south of the Church of St. Michael and All Angels, is a Grade II listed structure from the mid-19th century. It features a tall obelisk set on a tall plinth, which is inscribed in memory of Alice, who died in 1837, and Robert, an engineer who died in 1842. They were the parents of Robert and William Hawthorn. In front of the obelisk lies a headstone that has been laid flat, commemorating Alice, Robert, and other family members. Surrounding the tomb is a low sandstone wall with cushion-moulded coping. Historically, Robert Hawthorn was a pioneer in steam engine development, initially for pumping and later for marine propulsion. His firm became a significant player in railway and marine engineering.
