Description
Nos. 104 to 108 Grey Street, including No. 1 Hood Street, is a shop building constructed between 1902 and 1904 by architects W.H. Knowles and T. and R. Milburn. It is built of sandstone ashlar and has four storeys with five bays on Grey Street and three bays on the right return to Hood Street. The top three storeys feature a giant Corinthian order, with three-quarter columns in the centre of the Grey Street elevation and pilasters on the sides, topped with a full entablature and a bracketed cornice. The ground floor retains a well-preserved Edwardian shop front. The first floor has a tripartite window in the centre bays, with the centre lights flanked by low columns and a pediment; these windows are adorned with keystones and cornices. The second-floor windows display scrolled pediments or shaped cornices in the High Roman Baroque style, inspired by Rossi's Studio d'Architectura Civile. The third-floor windows are set within architraves.
