Description

The Chapel of St Edmund and Trinity Centre is an early 13th-century building featuring five bays. Its gable end facing the road showcases an elaborate design of seven stepped and moulded lancets beneath dripmoulds, with only the lancets at Nos 2, 4, and 6 being glazed. Below these lancets is a multi-moulded central doorway, which has three orders of nook shafts and is flanked by upper and lower pairs of trefoil-headed, multi-moulded blank arches. The south side of the chapel includes single lancets with plain chamfered heads and nook shafts, as well as stepped buttress bay divisions.

To the north is the Community Centre, which was formerly a church built in 1837 by John Dobson. This structure is related in design to the chapel and features five stepped lancets in its gable end, also under a relieving arch and dripmould. A projecting porch leads to the north vestry, which has an undercroft, and there is an octagonal turret topped with a short stone spire. This part of the building has been divided into two floors for community use, but retains its architectural features.

In the forecourt on the south side stands a fine late 16th-century stone doorway, which has short fluted pilasters, an entablature, and a flattened Tudor arched entrance. This doorway was relocated from the front of a court and originally served as the entrance to Gateshead House, which was built on the site of St Edmund's Hospital by William Riddell.
