Description
The Shambles is a single-storey brick building constructed between 1823 and 1825, located on High Street in Stockton on Tees. The building features nine windows on the sides and five windows on the ends. The ends and center of the sides project slightly and are a bit taller, while the center of the ends also projects slightly. It has corner piers and pilasters with stone footings and painted brick window dressings. The windows are casements with glazing bars; they are round-headed except for the pavilions on the sides and at the center of the ends, where there are segmental stone panels above the side windows of the end elevations. The building has a cement frieze and cornice. The south end includes a panel inscribed "Erected AD 1825. John Wilkinson Esq Mayor." There are various entrances to the building.
