Description
The George and Dragon Public House is an early to mid-18th century building located on High Street in Yarm. The walls are currently roughcast, and the structure features a deep moulded and dentilled eaves cornice beneath a pantiled roof that has a pronounced sweep, complete with end chimneys. The building stands three storeys tall and has two windows, all of which are early 19th century tripartite sash windows, although one has been replaced and the glazing is bare. To the right, there is a yard entrance that is set under a flattened elliptical arch. A plaque on the wall notes that on 12th February 1820, the promoters' meeting for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first public railway in the world, was held here. Additionally, a local blue plaque indicates that the George and Dragon was once a market inn and coaching house with stables.
