Description

The Eaglescliffe and Preston-on-Tees War Memorial is located in the center of Tittybottle Park. Constructed around 5 meters tall from grey Aberdeen granite, it features a small blind wheel-head cross atop a tapering shaft. The shaft rises from the cornice of a slightly tapering pedestal, which has a moulded base that stands on two steps. The highly polished granite cross shaft is adorned with engraved patterns along the edges, acanthus leaves at the base, and additional patterning around the foot of the shaft.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal states: "ERECTED AT THE END OF THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR (1914 – 1919) IN MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM EAGLESCLIFFE AND PRESTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN A JUST CAUSE. GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed on the two side faces of the pedestal, while the rear face bears the inscription: "TO LIVE IN HEARTS WE LEAVE BEHIND IS NOT TO DIE."

On the front face of the pedestal’s base, there is an inscription reading "ROLL OF HONOUR 2ND WORLD WAR (1939 – 1945)," with names listed on either side. Additionally, a soldier who died in 1950 is commemorated below the Second World War list on the left side.
