Description
Preston Hall Museum is a late 18th century or early 19th century house that features significant later additions from the 19th century. The original structure is a rectangular block with a service wing, built from pinkish brick with a stone plinth, a first-floor band, a cornice, and a blocking course. It has a hipped Welsh slate roof. In front of the house, there is a projecting link leading to a large stone porte-cochere from the late 19th century, designed in a neo-baroque style. Additional extensions of a similar date can be found to the left. Wrapping around the right corner is a larger conservatory from around 1900, added by the Ropner Shipping Company. This is connected to a large domed glass pavilion featuring half-decagonal bows on three sides with hipped roofs. The pavilion has arcaded walls with radial leaded heads and cast iron pilasters between glazed panels. The garden front of the original house displays a prominent three-window rounded bow, with sash windows that have glazing bars set under gauged brick arches. To the right, there is a six-window service wing. The interiors, which were lavishly updated in the later 19th century, reflect this period of enhancement.
