Description

The Billingham War Memorial is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, unveiled in 1954, with an additional plaque honoring a casualty from the Korean War.

Constructed from sandstone, the memorial has a trapezoidal shape featuring a wall flanked by angled stone benches, a shallow stepped approach, and a paved forecourt that faces northeast towards Station Road.

The stone wall is adorned with three bronze plaques and is designed in a classical style, complete with a depressed scrolled pediment and plain fluted pilasters. Above the plaques, an ashlar panel is inscribed with "IN MEMORIAH." The three bronze plaques list the names of the fallen from both World Wars in three columns, with the left-hand plaque also stating: "IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE / MEN AND WOMEN OF BILLINGHAM / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / TWO WORLD WARS."

Access to the memorial is provided by a forecourt made of three rows of paving slabs, leading to a stepped area for laying wreaths, situated between a pair of plain slab-sided stone benches that are fixed at either end of the memorial wall. Additionally, a small brown and cream painted metal plaque on the right-hand bench reads: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES / IN THE KOREAN CONFLICT – SGT. R. LIDDLE 1ST BATTALION DLI / DIED IN ACTION 5TH JUNE 1953."
