Description
The Church of St Cuthbert is a Grade I listed building located on the west side of The Green in Billingham. The tower dates from the 10th century, with an upper section added in the late 14th century. The nave is likely from the 9th century, featuring a north aisle and clerestory from the late 12th century, a south aisle from the 13th century, and a clerestory from the late 14th century, possibly coinciding with the tower's addition. The church is constructed of coursed rubble masonry, with a battlemented nave and tower. The original openings in the tower are two-light with baluster shafts and pierced spandrels in the bell stage, along with a small arch leading to the nave. The chancel was rebuilt in 1939 by Charlewood of Newcastle and features an early 17th-century screen and font cover.
