Description

This is a double-span house, with its eastern range dating back to the 17th century and alterations made in the early 19th century. The house is located on Church Road, Billingham. The eastern section is constructed of pinkish brick with a pantiled roof, while the western section uses ashlar and has a Welsh slate roof, with ridge stacks.

The east front is two stories high with five windows, featuring an irregular design, projecting chimney breasts, and a mix of fenestration. This includes Yorkshire sash windows and an early 19th-century tripartite sash window with glazing bars set within a square bay projection. A first-floor band runs along the facade. A modern, quasi-classical doorcase with a pediment sits at the entrance. The west front is also two stories high, with three large windows. It features tripartite sash windows with glazing bars recessed within projecting panels. The main entrance has a four-panel door topped with an oblong fanlight, all set within a doorcase that has a cornice resting on consoles.

Inside, a handsome staircase from the 17th century has a closed string entablature with a swelled frieze and dentil cornice. It also includes stout, urn-turned balusters, a deep handrail, flattened urn finials (some replaced), and reversed urn pendants.
