Description

Hope House is the remains of a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with part of it removed by the railway viaduct. The building features random stone construction with very large quoins at the base, and local brick above. It has two storeys and an attic, with a gable end facing the road and one wide bay return. The roof is pantiled with an end chimney. There is a first-floor string course and a stepped, dentilled eaves cornice. The windows include fixed and Yorkshire lights, and there is an east porch. Inside, some beams are exposed, including one from an open fireplace. A wall plaque notes that Hope House is Elizabethan and is probably the oldest dwelling house in Yarm.
