Description

This is a late 18th-century tithe barn located on High Street, Marske, which has been altered and converted into a house in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of herringboned sandstone with a 20th-century concrete tile roof and stone gable coping. It features a rough stone plinth. The exterior is two storeys and has a five-window range. A central doorway now has a 20th-century door, flanked by two square-glazing bar casements on each floor. There is a pronounced chamfered band at first floor level. The left side has a doorway leading to a lift, with an opening covered by a 20th-century door under a wooden lintel, and two square glazing bar casements on each floor to the right. The rear elevation has five square glazing bar casements, above a central loft doorway, now partially blocked, with a square glazing bar casement flanked by two similar casements. The interior was not inspected. This barn is a rare survival from a time when Marske was a port, and it was used to store goods awaiting export or import by sea.
