Description
The Listening Post, built around 1916, is located 330 meters north of Wheatlands Farmhouse on the north side of Redcar Road. It is constructed from rough-rendered cast slag-concrete and features a "U"-shaped plan with walls approximately 4.5 meters high. The northeast face of the middle wall has a full-height and width circular concave depression that served as a reflector dish to concentrate sound waves towards a microphone, which is now missing and mounted on a wooden pole. The structure has ramped flanking walls and is situated on a flat plain, 1,200 meters from the North Sea coastline. It was designed to provide early warning of approaching enemy Zeppelins and other aircraft during World War I. At the time of the last survey, the render was peeling off the outer faces of the side walls, and the structure was disused and in a dilapidated condition.
