Description

House. The main part of Birling Manor dates from the mid-18th century, with a two-bay extension built around 1752, and some alterations in the 19th century. The front elevation is constructed of ashlar, while the right return features good quality tooled stone, and the rear is of squared stone. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, with one stack rebuilt in brick. The main part is two storeys high and has one bay on the left and three bays on the right; the left bay is the 1752 extension. The older part has a plinth. A set of four steps, flanked by low walls with pyramid-capped end piers, leads to the original half-glazed front door. The windows are 12-pane sashes. All openings have lintels designed to resemble voussoirs. The extension features a 19th-century bay window with a battered plinth, sill band, tripartite sash, and moulded cornice, and an upper 12-pane sash. The extension has coped gables with moulded kneelers, a stepped ridge stack with a chamfered cap, and similar but rendered end stacks. A lower bay to the left of the extension also has 12-pane sashes and a coped gable with moulded kneelers, as well as a rebuilt end stack.

The right return shows a boarded attic window with external bars. The rear elevation includes a gabled stair wing with a 12-pane sash window, flanking sections of outshut with boarded doors (the right one within a chamfered surround), and a projecting gabled wing with renewed windows in early 19th-century chamfered surrounds, alongside a lower two-storey bay on the far left.

The interior of the house was not inspected during the listing process.
