Description
The Old Battery overlooking Alnmouth Links is a battery built in 1881 and altered during World War II. It is constructed from large squared stone with cut dressings. The pillbox features concrete lintels and a roof, with a brick lining in both the pillbox and the magazine. The structure has an irregular L-plan and is set approximately 1.5 meters below ground level, containing a rectangular chamber alongside a smaller magazine. Above the magazine is a turret that has been remodelled as a pillbox.
On the north side, there is a flight of stone steps leading down to a chamfered doorway, with a blocked loop to the left and a higher pillbox with a splayed loop above. The lower part to the right of the pillbox has a roof made of massive sandstone slabs. The right return features two square windows, with the pillbox above and behind showing a low door and a splayed loop. To the right of the door is an inscribed tablet that reads, "THIS BATTERY WAS ERECTED BY HIS GRACE ALGERNON DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND K.G. FOR THE USE OF THE PERCY ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS COMPLETED 12TH MARCH 1881." There is a similar square window at the rear. The left return has a projecting pillbox with a splayed loop on each face.
Inside, the rectangular chamber has a corbelled-out course below the ceiling and an L-plan hatch leading into the magazine. There are chamfered doorways into the lobby and magazine, and the interior of the magazine is lined with later brickwork. The battery is included for its historical interest.
