Description

The Church of St Mary and St Michael is a parish church dating from the 13th century and the 19th century. It is constructed of dressed stone and features a Welsh slate roof. The church includes a nave, a north aisle, a chancel, a baptistry, a south porch, and a north vestry.

The 1-bay baptistry at the east end was originally built as the chancel by Ignatius Bonomi in 1839 and features lancet windows. The south porch and door, also located at the east end, were added in 1893.

The nave and west chancel have continuous walls and a roof line, comprising five bays. The two bays with original lancets form the chancel, while the nave has Victorian lancets. The west end retains an original lancet, and the north side features Victorian lancets and is partly rebuilt. The church has a gabled roof with a bellcote from 1893 above the east end of the nave.

Inside, there is a 13th-century arch with moulded capitals and a chamfered arch, which now serves as the chancel arch but previously separated the nave from the west chamber until 1893. The church also has a three-bay 13th-century north arcade in a similar style, with shouldered rere arches to the original lancets in the chancel. Additionally, there is a re-cut Norman font with capitals of columns that were part of former blind arcading. Three medieval grave covers are built into the porch.
