Description
This is a group of three headstones located approximately 12 yards south of the Church of St. Bartholomew in Whittingham Village. The headstones date from 1736, 1745, and 1764 and are made of small sandstone tablets.
The first headstone, for Thomas Fforster, dates to 1736 and features a pediment with primitive lettering and a primitive angel's head in the pediment. The second headstone, for Luke Embleton, dates to 1764 and has a shaped and moulded top. The third headstone, for Michael Hall, dates to 1745 and is inscribed with "memento mori," accompanied by a skull in a segmental-pedimented top.
