Description
The Whittingham War Memorial Cross is located to the south of the Church of St Bartholomew, which is a Grade I-listed building. It is positioned near the church's First World War memorial window, unveiled in 1920 by the Bishop of Newcastle, to honor the 33 local servicemen who died in the conflict.
The memorial cross is made of Blaxter stone and features York stone steps. It is a simple Latin cross approximately 2.5 meters tall, with an octagonal section that rises from a square pedestal. The pedestal is set on a two-stepped base, elevated on a low stone platform. The front face of the pedestal bears the inscription: 1914 -/ -1918/ 1939 -/ -1945.
