Description
This pair of headstones, dating from the 19th century, is located 1 metre east of the Church of St. Cuthbert in Bedlington. They are made of sandstone. The southern headstone features an inscription commemorating Elizabeth Burdon, the wife of William Burdon of Hartford. The inscription highlights her virtues, describing her as possessing more virtues and fewer faults than is typical, with characteristics such as prudence and good sense. It notes her as a spirited yet gentle and humane individual, a dutiful wife, a tender mother, and a kind friend. Elizabeth suffered from consumption, beginning on October 5, 1805, and passed away on September 17, 1806, at the age of 31, leaving a deep sense of loss among those who knew her.
The northern headstone includes a medallion depicting an inverted boat and commemorates Sarah, the wife of Peter Stavers, who died in 1863, along with their son Wilkinson. Wilkinson drowned in a storm in the Cattegat in 1864, along with his wife Hannah and the entire crew of the Brig Robert and Mary of Blyth.
