Description

Whitton Cottage at Whitton Grange is a house built in 1921, incorporating some masonry from an earlier structure. It was designed by Robert Mauchlen for Sir Angus Watson. The building features ashlar stonework with a chamfered plinth and a Lakeland slate roof.

The house is arranged in a U-shape, with a central section flanked by projecting cross-gabled wings. It has two storeys and six windows. The central section includes two semicircular steps leading to a central panelled door, which is framed by a bolection-moulded surround and topped with a shaped stone hood supported by brackets. The lintel above the door is inscribed with "A 19 W 21." Above the door is a round-headed niche with pilasters, a moulded archivolt, and a keystone, with the base inscribed "EN ATTENDANT UNE MEILLEURE." Flanking the entrance are five-light windows on the ground floor, featuring flat mullions in shallow moulded surrounds and leaded casements. On the first floor, there are four similar three-light windows with floating cornices.

The wings of the house also have six-light windows on each floor, with niches above them. The roof is hipped with gabled wings, and there are two tall corniced stacks at the junction of the centre and wings. On the left return, there is a lean-to sun lounge with corniced end piers and later glazed infill.

The rear of the house is irregular and picturesque, featuring similar windows and an apsidal stair projection, along with a hipped dormer.

Attached to the right is the former coach house and coachman's flat, which is now a cottage in a similar style, featuring a steeply-pitched roof with a slate-hung gable.
