Description
The ha-ha wall with angle bastions and statues, dating from the early 18th century, encloses Seaton Delaval Hall and the Church of Our Lady. Constructed from squared stone, the wall features ashlar bastions and lead statues on ashlar pedestals. It surrounds a rectangular area measuring 360 by 220 metres, with Seaton Delaval Hall located at the centre of the north side. The wall stands 2 metres high, while the circular angle bastions rise to 3.5 metres and have flat coping. Each bastion originally housed a classical statue, which have since been removed: the statue of Samson slaying the Philistine from the north-east bastion is now in the garden, while the statue of David and Goliath from the north-west bastion and the statue of Diana from the south-east bastion have also been relocated. The statues were mounted on panelled pedestals that included a plinth and cornice. Currently, only the pedestal plinth remains in the south-west bastion. At the time of the survey, Diana had been moved to the Orangery, and David and Goliath were away for repair. The section of the wall between the north-east bastion and the Hall has been rebuilt and is not considered of special interest.
