Description

A terrace of eight houses at 1-8 Lovaine Terrace, Alnmouth, built around 1860 for the Duke of Northumberland. The houses are constructed using concrete blockwork, which has been rendered and colourwashed, and have Welsh slate roofs. Each house is two storeys high with an attic and has two bays. The terrace follows the natural slope of the ground, stepping downhill from south to north. Houses 3, 5 and 7 retain original four-panel doors with plain overlights, while house 8 has a round-arched passage entrance. Several ground-floor windows have been enlarged; houses 2 and 3 feature late 19th-century oriels, and house 8 has a full-height, castellated bay window. The original windows were mostly four-pane sashes. All original window and door openings have raised surrounds. There are five small gabled roof dormers and four ridge stacks. Each house is painted a different pastel colour. The terrace is listed for its historical significance as an early example of experimental concrete block construction.
