Description
Lilburn Chapel is a ruined chapel dating from the 11th century. It is constructed from massive blocks of dressed stone and features a nave, chancel, and a 13th-century south chapel. The chapel has a long, tall, and narrow form, characteristic of Anglo-Saxon architecture. The walls on the north side stand approximately 9 feet high, while those on the south side are about 5 feet. The east and west ends of the chapel reach gable height. There are remains of plain, square responds from the former chancel arch, and the responds leading into the south chapel display 13th-century mouldings. Inside the chancel, small square recesses may have served as an aumbry and piscina. Additionally, there are two elaborate medieval tomb slabs located in the south chapel and one in the nave.
