Description
This large headstone commemorates John Blenkinsopp, who died in 1822. It is made of sandstone and features a reeded border. The semicircular top has a sunk panel that contains a relief shield with the Blenkinsopp crest, which is surmounted by a bent arm grasping a sword. Below the shield, which is revealed by drawn-back carved drapery, is an inscription bearing the motto: "PERSEVERANCE." The shield is inscribed with the names of John Blenkinsopp, his brother Thomas, and their sister Elizabeth. At the base of the shield are reliefs of stacked books, which are crowned by lamps with flames.
