Description
The premises of Gregg's, Billy Bell, and Walter Willson is a mid-19th century terrace featuring three shops on the ground floor with flats and storage above. It is constructed from squared stone and topped with a green slate roof, which includes a rebuilt brick chimney stack. The building has three storeys and six bays, with flush quoins. The early 20th-century tiled and glazed shop front for Billy Bell, the fishmonger, is flanked by late 20th-century glazed shop fronts. A boarded door in the early 20th-century frontage leads to a cross-passage that provides access to the rear yard. The upper floors feature 16-pane sash windows, replaced casements, and two blocked windows set in raised surrounds. A fire insurance mark from the Newcastle Insurance Company is centrally located on the first floor. The low-pitched roof has coped gables and a chimney stack at the right end. This building is included for its group value, although the 20th-century wing at the right rear is not of special interest.
