Description
The premises of J.M. Clark, Clive Brown and Armstrong, Watson and Co. is likely a bastle house that has been converted and extended for use as shops and offices, with storage space above. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with enlargements made in the early 18th and 19th centuries. The building features painted roughcast masonry, a pantiled roof, and brick chimney stacks.
It is a tall three-storey structure with three wide bays. The right return showcases a large boulder plinth and bastle-type masonry. The main entrance is off-centre, featuring a replaced door with an overlight set in a stone surround, topped by a bracketed wooden hood. This door is flanked by 20th-century glazed shop fronts. The first floor has replaced sashes, with two windows on the right in smaller openings. The second floor contains 12-pane sashes, with two on the right that have thick glazing bars.
The roof has swept eaves, a coped right gable, and a shaped kneeler. There is a rebuilt ridge stack and a wide pebble-dashed stack at the right end, which includes a water table and top ledge. Additionally, there are 19th-century additions at the rear.
