Description
The entrance screen and gates to Chesters were designed around 1891 by Norman Shaw. They are constructed from ashlar stone and feature channeled rustication on the piers, along with wrought iron elements. The design has a stepped quadrant plan. The central gateway includes piers with a plinth, a pulvinated frieze, a dentil cornice, and ball finials, supporting double gates that have scroll-topped stiles and fleur-de-lys decorations on the bars and dogbars. There are smaller pedestrian gates on either side. Each side of the screen has a low wall with arched and moulded coping, connecting nine piers that also have pulvinated friezes and moulded caps.
