Description

The Donkin and Aitken headstones, located 14 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary in Lesbury, date from the late 18th century and are made of sandstone. The southern headstone features a lobed top with carved cherubs and a flower border surrounding a shaped panel that includes an inscription for Arthur Donkin, who died in 1779, and Grace Donkin, who died in 1800. This stone displays good quality carving and is well preserved. The northern headstone has a shaped top adorned with carved urns and foliage above the inscription for Sarah Aitken, the wife of Thomas Aitken of Alnmouth, who died in 1795.
