Description

The monumental column, erected in 1786 by Sir John Soane, stands 410 metres south-east of Lemmington Hall as a memorial for James Evelyn's parents. Originally located at Felbridge Park in Surrey, it was moved to its current site in 1928 by Sir Stephen Aitchison. The column is made of ashlar stone and sits on a platform of roughly-squared stone that incorporates various 17th and 18th century architectural fragments.

The column features a plain square plinth and a moulded circular base, which is encircled by a self-swallowing serpent. The shaft is smooth and tapering, leading up to a capital with scrolled necking that supports a corniced square block. Above this is a cylindrical altar with curved fluting, which bears an eternal flame. The overall height of the column is approximately 15 metres.

Inscriptions on the column include a dedication on the north side of the shaft that reads: "JACOBUS EVELYN Filius EDWARD EVELYN Et Juliae,Uxoris Ejus (O' Benignissimi Parentes,) Hanc Columnam, Hac Terra. (Natale Solum) Ponendam Plentissime Gratissimeque Curavit D MDCCLXXXVI Johannes Soane Architectus U.B." Additionally, there are 14 verses from Addison's 'Hymn to Gratitude', the phrase 'Manners Makyth Man' on the drum, and 'Soli Deo Gloria' on the entablature.

This column is notable as one of Sir John Soane's early commissions and is his only work in Northumberland. It was transported to the site in 1927/8 by sea, rail, and a specially-constructed light electric railway. The lettering on the shaft was recut in 1941.
