Description

Embleton United Reformed Church is a Presbyterian church built in 1833 and altered around 1920. The west front features squared and coursed whinstone blocks, while the other sides are made of whinstone rubble with raised whin quoins and dressings, and are rendered and pebbledashed. It has cut sandstone sills, lintels, and gable copings, topped with a Welsh slate roof.

The west front consists of four bays. The center bays have tall pointed windows with wood Y-tracery, each containing a Gothick-headed 16-pane sash window, and a roundel above with the date. The right end bay features a 12-pane Gothick sash window under a pointed arch, with a similar blocked window above. The left end bay has a gabled porch from around 1920, which includes flush-panelled double doors in a bolection-moulded surround on the left side. The front of the porch has a small window with a slit above, under a coped gable supported by moulded kneelers, topped with a ball finial. Above the porch is another blocked pointed window. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers. At the right end, there is a small single-storey extension with a 9-pane sash window.

The two-bay left return facing the street has 12-pane sashes in the left bay, while the right bay has a similar blocked window now holding a noticeboard, under a Diocletian window from around 1920. The three-bay rear elevation features 16-pane sashes and a flush-panelled door with a 4-pane overlight.

The interior was remodeled around 1920, when the side parts of the gallery were removed and the rear part, supported by two cast-iron columns on stepped ashlar bases, was converted into a separate upper hall.
