Description
The chimney located 60 metres east of North Shotton Farmhouse is an engine house chimney dated 1860, featuring the initials MWR, which stand for Matthew White Ridley. The base is constructed of rough-faced stone with rock-faced quoins, while the stack is made of white engineering brick with ashlar dressings. The square base has a chamfered plinth and small brick-arched openings on the east and west sides, along with a dated panel on the east. The circular stack is stepped and chamfered at the foot, topped with a moulded cornice. Although the attached engine house and threshing barn have been demolished, the chimney remains an important landmark on the hilltop.
