Description
The grave slab located outside the east wall of the porch of the Church of St. Bartholomew dates from around 1200. It is made of sandstone and is cracked into two pieces. This slightly-coped double slab features a separate bracelet cross on each face. The cross on the left has foliage springing from the shaft, while the one on the right is accompanied by shears. The design is relief-carved. This monument is an unusual type that commemorates both a man and a wife. A similar, more steeply coped double slab from the same period can be found at St. Andrew's Church in Haughton-le-Skerne, near Darlington.
