Description
This railway bridge, built around 1836, is located 50 meters south of The Spittal and is possibly designed by Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway Company. It is constructed from dressed, tooled-and-margined sandstone and features a brick-lined tunnel within a wide segmental skew arch supported by rusticated voussoirs. Both faces of the bridge are similar in design. The parapet, which sits above a dentilled chamfered band, includes paired end piers that project forward. Late 20th-century brick coping courses and iron railings on the parapet are not considered of special interest.
