Description
Etal Rhodes Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-18th century. It is built of ashlar stone with a square plinth and has a tiled roof with 19th-century brick chimneys. The house has a double-pile plan and stands two storeys plus attics, featuring three bays and lower additions to the right. There is a mid-19th century porch with a door on the left side, and the windows are renewed 12-pane sashes set in raised surrounds. The steeply-pitched gabled roof has splayed coping and end stacks.
At the rear, there is a very tall 24-pane round-headed stair window with intersecting glazing bars, set in a keyed raised surround, along with four renewed 12-pane sashes.
Inside, the farmhouse features a mid-18th century open-string staircase with a moulded and ramped handrail, turned balusters with turned knops, and 18th-century roof timbers that include king and queen posts and diagonal struts. There is a panelled keyed arch between the hall and the stairs, and a large stone elliptical-arched fireplace with a keystone.
