Description
This headstone, located 14 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. Cuthbert, was erected in 1805 and is made of sandstone. It features a relief carving that includes an anchor, an arrow, and a scythe within a cable moulding, flanked by sailing ships and an overturned boat on billows, with the heads of drowning persons depicted.
The inscription honors John Hedley of North Blyth, a pilot who drowned on January 14, 1805, at the age of 39, along with three other pilots while performing his duties. The inscription expresses his memory and the sorrow of his widow and three small children. It includes a poignant message about finding peace and everlasting bliss. The headstone also references two other pilots, whose memorials can be found at the Redford headstone in Newbiggin and the Watts headstone in Blyth.
