Description
7-9 The Square is a terrace of houses dating from the mid-18th century, likely incorporating some earlier materials. The rear outshut of No. 9 is from the late 18th century, while the rear wing of No. 8 was added in 1862, as indicated by a dated lintel. The buildings are constructed of rubble, with squared stone lower courses for Nos. 7 and 8, and feature cut quoins and dressings. They have stone slate roofs and are two storeys high with five irregular bays.
The doors are vertical-panelled, located between bays 1 and 2 (No. 9), in bay 3 (No. 8), and in bay 5 (No. 7), with the door of No. 9 having a 2-pane overlight. The windows include 20th-century casements in the old openings of bays 1 and 2, 12-pane sashes on the first floor in bays 3 and 4, and other late 19th-century 4-pane sashes. There are fragments of medieval window heads built into the wall flanking the windows. The left end of the terrace features two ridge stacks, one of which has been heightened in brick.
Inside No. 9, there is a plain late 18th-century fireplace and four-panel doors.
