Description
Gowland's Cottage is a house that was originally a monastic building, dating from the 15th century and remodeled in the mid-18th century. It is constructed of rubble with stone dressings and features a stone slate roof. The front elevation has two storeys and four irregular bays. There is a vertical-panelled door in the second bay and another door between the third and fourth bays, with the latter set in a chamfered surround that has a depressed rounded head. The windows are primarily late 19th-century sashes set in 18th-century stone surrounds, except for a 20th-century window in the earlier chamfered surround in the ground floor bay three. The building has stone stacks at both ends and on the ridge. The rear elevation shows varied window styles, including a former two-light window in a chamfered surround on the first floor and a blocked single-light window in a chamfered surround on the ground floor. Inside, the central room on the ground floor features a 15th-century ceiling with a heavy transverse beam and chamfered joists, all with broach stops. This building has undergone significant alterations and is believed to be the southern part of the monastic east range, likely serving as the dorter at the first floor level.
