Description
No. 10 The Square is a house from the mid-19th century that incorporates earlier fabric, possibly from the medieval period. It is constructed of rubble, with squared stone on the right side and features tooled dressings, topped by a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and two bays.
A central projecting porch includes a chamfered loop and a coped gable with kneelers. The porch has a vertical-panelled door set within a triangular-headed stop-chamfered surround on the left wall. There is a 20th-century window in the left bay, while the first floor features plate glass sashes. The right gable is coped with kneelers and has a corbelled-out corniced stack, along with a stepped-and-corniced ridge stack.
At the rear right, there is a gabled wing, and the right return wall, which is at a skew angle, shows older masonry in its lower part. Additionally, medieval architectural fragments have been re-set in the wall of the rear wing. This house is believed to be located on the site of the Abbey Mill.
