Description

Nos. 11 and 12 The Square are a pair of houses located in Blanchland. No. 11 dates from the mid-18th century and was altered in the 19th century, while No. 12 was built around 1900. No. 11 is constructed from coursed stone with tooled-and-margined dressings, whereas No. 12 is made of rubble with cut dressings. Both houses have stone slate roofs and are two storeys high with an irregular six-bay layout.

The doors are vertical-panelled, located in bays 3 (for No. 12) and 5 (for No. 11). No. 11 features late 19th-century sash windows, but all its openings are in blocked surrounds. There are two stone ridge stacks, with the one on the right being widened in brick, and a stone stack at the right end. The right return of No. 11 shows a renewed 12-pane sash window and a 16-pane sash window in a stone surround above, along with a reverse-stepped gable. The rear elevation of No. 11 has two small 19th-century first-floor windows that once lit the cells when this building served as a police station.
