Description
Flotterton House is a house built in 1826 by John Dobson for Mr. Weallans. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a plinth and features a Lakeland slate roof. The main block is square in shape, with lower service wings to the left.
The garden front has two storeys and five bays, highlighted by a full-height, three-bay central bow window. The façade includes angle pilasters, with full-length 15-pane sash windows on the ground floor, which are margined in the outer bays. The first floor features shortened 9-pane sashes, also margined in the outer bays. The building is topped with a cornice and projecting stone eaves, and the hipped roof has two corniced ridge stacks.
The lower four-bay service wing to the left has a slightly recessed right bay that contains a half-glazed door with an overlight, and a 6-pane sash window above it, along with a dentilled cornice. The rest of the service wing features 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and small 8-pane sashes above, all beneath a hipped roof.
The entrance front consists of three bays, with a half-glazed door set in a recessed porch supported by two square Tuscan columns. The windows are 12-pane sashes with moulded sills and aprons.
Inside, there is a cantilevered stair with stick balusters. The sitting room features a frieze decorated with a row of palmettes and a row of Greek key patterns. The dining room has a frieze with pairs of cornucopia alternating with palmettes, topped by a dentil cornice.
