Description
The gate piers and screen wall adjacent to Allenmill Bridge date from the mid-19th century and mark the entrance to a former lead smelting mill. They are constructed of stone, featuring two large piers made of rock-faced stone topped with stepped pyramidal caps. The wall is made of squared rubble and includes a boarded door set in an alternating rock-faced surround, extending from the left pier to a third, more slender pier that is positioned at the end of the parapet of Allenmill Bridge. This structure represents the only visible remains of the Allendale Smeltmill, which operated from 1692 to 1896. The gate piers and screen wall are included in the listing primarily for their group value with Allenmill Bridge.
