Description

This is a headstone located 17 metres south of the east end of the Church of St. Mary in Lesbury, dating from 1799. It is made of sandstone and features a relief-carved top panel that includes an anchor, rope, trumpet, arrow, and scythe, surrounded by scenes of shipwrecks. The inscription commemorates George Brown of Bedlington, a master mariner who was wrecked on this coast on April 5, 1799, at the age of 46. The inscription reads:

"The Boreas blasts & Neptunes Waves
Hath tost me to and fro
In spite of both by Gods decree
I Harbour here below
Now here at Anchor I do lie
With many of our Fleet
In hopes to set my Sail again
My Saviour Christ to meet."
