Description
Blackett Level is an adit portal to a lead mine, built in 1854. It features stone construction with iron fittings. The entrance has a narrow horseshoe arch made of dressed stone voussoirs, which is set into a squared rubble wall. An iron girder bolted to the right jamb is part of the fittings for an old iron gate. Inside the mouth of the adit, there is a late 20th-century iron grille, and a stream emerges from it. This site is one of the best-known levels in Allendale and was worked until 1903. It was driven to drain the deep workings at Allenheads but was never completed.
