Description
Newminster Abbey is the ruin of a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1137, with most visible remains dating from around 1180. The structure is built from sandstone.
Significant portions of the cloister have been re-erected, featuring pointed and round arches supported by paired slender columns with waterleaf capitals. To the east, the doorway to the chapter house has also been re-erected, showcasing a round arch with two orders of columns and waterleaf capitals.
To the north, the remains of the church include parts of a large north window and a section of a 15th-century screen with cinquefoil heads to the lights, located in the north transept. Numerous other fragments are scattered around, along with the footings of many walls. The 13th-century tiled floor of the Abbot's chapel was not exposed at the time of the survey.
Newminster Abbey is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
