Description

The churchyard cross, located 17 metres west of the door of the Church of St. Mary in Blanchland, is likely from the 13th century. It is made of gritstone and features a monolithic shaft with chamfered angles and broach stops at the base, topped with a bracelet cross head. The overall height of the cross is 2.9 metres. It has an octagonal base that is currently at ground level, with steps that are probably beneath the present ground level. This cross is a rare example of a complete early medieval churchyard cross.
