Description
Thirlings is a house built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, which was extended and given Italianate details between 1860 and 1870. The main block features scored stucco with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof, while the wing is constructed of brick.
The main block is two storeys high and has five bays across the front and three bays deep. It has rusticated quoins and a flush-panelled door located on the side of a two-storey castellated porch, which includes an oeil-de-boeuf window and a blank quatrefoil. The windows are 4-pane sash types set in raised surrounds. The Italianate roof has projecting eaves supported by numerous stone brackets and is hipped with two corniced ridge stacks.
The garden front features single-storey bow windows in the outer bays, with three 12-pane sashes in each. There is a canted bay window in the centre and additional 4-pane sashes between. To the right, there is a single-storey L-shaped wing with seven bays on the south front, which also has 12-pane sashes in raised chamfered surrounds and a moulded cornice. The roof is hipped on the right and has three corniced ridge stacks.
Inside, the house contains six-panelled doors and a staircase with cast iron balusters and a wreathed handrail.
